Competition # 7 - The Seaside
Following on from the talk last night I decided to have 'The Seaside' as the theme for the next competition.
A very broad based subject, I'm sure everyone has some snaps that fit the subject. Everything for portraits to landscapes (or is that seascapes?) is possible, with lots of other subjects too. UK or abroad, any location is acceptable.
Closing date will be midnight on the 25th of Jan.
I can't win, but I'll post an entry anyway later today.
Paul or John, could you make this a sticky please.

It's competition # 7 of course, not 6.
Here's one to get the ball rolling. Porec in Croatia last summer.

Re: Competition # 7 - The Seaside
Well, here are the top three. But before I list them I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone that entered. There were quite a varied bunch of photographs and all had merit, but three had to be chosen and from them a winner. This is all my personal choice so feel free to think I'm blind or an idiot (or both) if I haven't chosen your photograph <grin>.
In third place Tom with his shot of Morecambe bay. Not how I remember it looking from Morecambe itself, but a shot with lots of colour and a pleasantly brooding sky in the background. Can you remember where this was taken? I wouldn't mind a trip there myself.
In second place Len with his photograph of Southport. Technically it could be better. The horizon drops of to the right and there's some vignetting. However I like the shear bleakness of this. Tom's photograph may not be how I think of Morecambe bay, but this is certainly how I think of the beach at Southport.
So onto the winner. From when it was posted this was the one that I thought was the one to beat, and in the end it wasn't beaten - all IMHO of course. A great composition that was sell seen. It's Des' photograph of the surfer and the children. Personally I'd have cropped out the wave at the top left as I think that makes it even stronger with the horizontal wave in the middle at the diagonal wave running left to right, but that's nit picking. The position of the subjects, their pose, their reflection on the wet sand all help to make this an excellent image.
Congratulations Des your turn to pick the theme for competition number 8.
Finally a note to the mods, is it possible to allow slightly larger images? I'd prefer 800 pixels wide, or even 700, I don't think 600 really does the photographs justice. Just a thought, feel free to say no <grin>.

Re: Competition # 7 - The Seaside
Thanks for that Steve.
Another excellent selection of images, many thanks to all who entered and congratulations to our winner Des!
It looks to me as though we would be OK with 800 pixels wide. We're not trying to restrict images because of bandwidth but to avoid cut-off on some browsers.
By all means try to post at 800 pixels and if it should be that it gets cut off then just delete it and re-post with a smaller size.

Thanks Steve for selecting my image as the winner, "young surfers" .
It was taken on a beach near Sagres Portugal. New competition subject to follow.
