There is an excellent exhibition at the Turnpike gallery in Leigh (above the library). It is called "No Man's Land" and is based around women photographers in WW1. The images are fascinating. One photographer was official, documenting the rebuilding in 1919 but two were during the war. One was a volunteer in a Belgian first aid post and the pictures show staff larking around and having fun - a different perspective on the war. A second was a British woman who worked as a nurse with the Russians on the Eastern front, another unusual view. Interestingly she used a plate camera on the front. There is a set of modern portraits of women in the forces.
The exhibition is free and is on until January 12th.
