Is using Photoshop immoral?

Post by Paul Jones »

Interesting Blog article from Karl Taylor with a really good 'Before and After' (move the slider from side to side to see the difference).

Before and After - http://www.karltaylorphotography.co.uk/ ... d-after/2/
Video - http://www.karltaylorphotography.co.uk/ ... d-after/3/

Personally, I can relate to his statement, "As a photographer I am drawn to creating images of perfection. I find the idea of making pictures of objects or people that look ‘hyper-real’ incredible, it’s like the holy-grail of image making."

Any comments?
Paul

As long as we're not attempting to deceive then it's not immoral. In the past, retouching has been done to try and frame politicians even before Photoshop was available. Now we're almost at the point where a video sequence could be made from scratch to show something happening that never happened at all. That's immoral.
Best regards

It depends on what the purpose of the alteration is Paul - I agree with John if it's meant to deceive. However, if it is meant to delete unwanted objects from a photo to make the scene look prettier (eg removal of an advert from a nice building) then it's ok in my book - but if it was intended to be a true record of that scene at a point in time, then it's not ok. If we analyse the Karl Taylor's comments about retouching - the model has been physically retouched before she got anywhere near the camera - i.e. lipstick, mascara, etc.

Another Photoshopping example....

Terry Richardson Photos of Mariah Carey Before and after Photoshop

http://jezebel.com/retouch-my-body-terr ... 1603712028

Terry Richardson shot Mariah Carey for Wonderland magazine's summer issue and, according to the unretouched images obtained exclusively by Jezebel, it would seem that Uncle Terry's point-and-shoot-built-in-flash style isn't flattering enough for publication.

Stunning photography, wouldn't you agree, from 'top fashion photographer' Richardson. 8)

Terry Richardson doesn't seem too popular according to some of the comments Paul....... :-)

Of course, it's not just ladies who are retouched...

Personally, my aim with any of my images is to make the subject look as good as I possibly can. 8)

All that I see, seems so unreal to me,
Is it the truth or is it only fantasy,
Is it a dream or is it unreal reality?

All around me is such unreality,
Optical illusions as far as my eyes can see,
Is the whole thing a fake, or the ultimate reality?

Or an overdose of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds ...

With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Where rocking horse people eat marshmellow pies
Newpaper taxis appear on the shore
With plasticine porters with looking glass ties
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstyle ...
The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes
