Re: Saturday Workshiop on Studio Lighting

Excellent session on Saturday. I have never used "proper" lights and I have always been a bit daunted. Many thanks to Stuart for sharing his time and knowledge (and trusting us with his equipment) . We had a great day and I am now planning to get a pair of speedlights and some stands and m...

scanning 35mm transparencies

Following the sad loss of my mother in law we have found several boxes of 35mm transparencies from father in laws days as an amateur photographer. They appear to taken around Oldham in the late 1950s and early 1960s and include family members but also look like interesting street scenes. Any advice ...

Re: #191 harbours

I have just type out comments on the photos and then accidentally deleted the lot :-O  This might be a bit shorter....... These are my thoughts on a great set of pictures. Please accept them in the spirit they are made, they aren't expert. Tracey: fabulous sky which fits the title beautifully....

Re: “Sharpness is a bourgeois concept.”

Any question which starts "Does a photograph have to be (sharp, composed according to rules, RAW, monochrome, portrait, landscape.........) to have merit?" demands the answer "no", because we can all quote excellent images from great photographers which break the "rules"...

#191 harbours

Any port in a storm, or in glorious weather for that matter. To remind ourselves that it is supposed to be summer, let's get to the coast and have some pictures of harbours and boats. I would be happy to see two or three images per photographer to share a few more images but that would be creating a...

Re: #190 Taken to drink....

Thanks Janice,

Just milk I am afraid. It was a fun exercise. The glass is small and I set it up against a white sheet facing a patio window which doesn't get direct sunlight because of the conservatory. I then lit it using a very simple LED pocket torch.

Now for another subject....

Annual competition entry form

I notice that the annual forms have been updated. The forms say that if a memory stick is used there should be a digital copy of the entry form included (presumably the same is true of emailed entries). Please could we have the form in a format suitable for editing (such as a .doc file) rather than ...

Re: 183 GREEN

Thanks for the helpful comments - I like the idea of the Hank as a unit of shadow. I was out in the cemetery at Kendal trying to photograph the fantastic display of crocuses but I always get sidetracked by the monkey puzzle. I thought about focus stacking but it is a huge tree with long swinging bra...
