Forum Competiton #109 "Long Exposure"

Post by Critical Mass »

Having just aquired some Hitech filters ( expensive but still cheap compared to the Lee system ) I want to try some long exposure photography. So this is my subject, It could be anything from a minimalistic sea scape, some traffic streaks, cityscape or night scenes......anything goes. Hopefully I willget some inspiration.

Entries will end at midnight on 21st June.

Not everyone is going to have filters I presume so I'm not going to set a riduculous speed as long as there is movement in the picture anything goes, I've shot a waterfall without using filters and It came out ok - This was f22 / ISO200 / 0.6 / 24mm

This one is about the longest exposure (1.5 sec) I can find in my archives. Taken on a wet cold winters night in Hawes Wensleydale.

Ashton in makerfield m6 the night before the competition was posted for long exposure 100 iso f8 8 sec this would have been longer due to not much traffic but camera won't do anymore.

1 Eric
My eyes are drawn to the blown out lights at the top of the pub. I'm not sure what fstop was used on this shot but maybe f16 - f22 may have given you a fighting chance with the lights.

2 Tracy
More what I was looking for with the theme :-] . The conversion to black and white coupled with the gloomy sky gives it a real spooky edge.

3 Keasla
Shot this place sooo many times. looks like you got there at the right time with the fading glow of the sun. The reflections are great also. I don't think HDR ( which I have nothing against, and it's done well )does the shot justice though. Would love to see a straight shot.

4 Mark
I have no experience whatsoever with pinhole so i can't comment on your technique, as for the image, I am not feeling a gain from such a long exposure.

5 Collier15
Traffic streaks, probably best time to do them is more towards Winter, when it is dark enough around tea-time and the motorwys are choc full of commuters. Great effort though. The streaks you did get are well taken.

6 KevinLowe
Another shot which more fits the theme. The line between sea and horizon is crisp and the pole just adds that little bit of interest. Would love to see this in BnW. Great shot.

7 Stopher02
I have been out with a mate of mine messing with these "orbs". Ours were a lot less spherical than yours i can say! lol. great colours and great orb.

8 GerryG
Again as i mentioned with Keasla's sho,. It's a great place to shoot but the HDR spoils the image a little. I am drawn to the halo at the top of the rooof. Great control with the lights, as i was mentioning to Eric in the first shot.

9 Mel Barnes
Love the neon, and am i right in thinking you zoomed through the focal length during the exposure? Great effect well excecuted.

10 Matthew
I am not sure of the purpose of this shot, I am presuming the only reason some of the men are widly out of focus is because it was a hand held shot in difficult lighting conditions.

Some great efforts but i would have loved to have seen a little more creativity with the theme

3Rd Place - Tracy Mcgovern
2ND Place - Mel Barnes
1St Place - KevinLowe
