#156 COLOURS OF AUTUMN

Post by mikeaspinall »

It appears that Gordon has a lot on his plate at the moment so I have been asked (as runner up last time) to set a subject
for this competition.
Have had a look at previous subjects and Autumn hasn't been used for a long time. It always seems to me that this is the
shortest Season as the Autumn colours disappear too soon to be replaced by Winter.
So let's see your images please and to give an opportunity to everybody let's say that this runs to midnight Friday 6th November.
As said Autumn colours won't last too long so get out there and capture them folks.

Hi everybody.
Who'd be daft enough to be a judge? Nice collection of images this time and interesting interpretations of subject.

Well here goes.

JOHN - Fly Algaric has some wonderful colours in the deep reds speckled with white and the deep green grass sets it off
very nicely. As I don't know anything about the subject the only problem that I have is that this could easily be another
Season. As usual a classy shot though.

GILL - I like sunsets and this one is very nice. The sun is low and on the thirds, the two figures add to the image but perhaps
the construction takes up a bit too much space and maybe the orange spot is one too many sunspots.

MEL - The castle image is very good, the archway leads your eye through to the nice view beyond. The stonework
suits the coloured leaves which frame it beautifully. The only thing that spoils it for me which could be my
screen is that it is a little pale for me and maybe the contrast could have brought out even more detail.

ERIC - This is a very nice picture, well composed in the classic eye leading lines to the horizon. The big bale is exactly
where it should be and holds the picture together. Well done but I had to check with the 'Boss' as to when harvest
was and she says Autumn so it is Autumn but as my subject was 'colours' this doesn't quite get there.

MRS Y - Nice landscape with Mr Y taking his picture. However this could just as easily have been taken in high Summer
with the lovely blue sky and bright greens.

TRACEY - This is the kind of image that I was expecting with the colours that I associate with Autumn. Nice landscape
with the water leading to the trees and their brown/yellow leaves but I feel that the contrast between the dark
foreground and the bright centre is a little distracting.

SIMON - Again this is the kind of picture that I associate with the season. Damp brown leaves in the foreground and dark
green trees in the background. For me however, it's a little TOO dark. Nice try though.

SUE - Well I asked for colour and you have certainly got that although there only two of them. Edge to edge colour
but on my screen it just doesn't look very sharp and nothing for my eye to lock onto. Sorry.

JANICE - The fallen. Fits the bill very nicely. The leaf is perfect Autumn colour and the rough ground sets it off very
nicely. Nothing to distract the eye and I like it very much.

IAN - Again, nice colours with the two plants/trees but of course the background is a problem. Without the table and
chair it would be very much nicer I think. Perhaps if you had concentrated on just one plant and gone in a bit
closer it would have been better.

THE RESULT

3rd place goes to Mr Yachtsman as even though I'm not sure it is Autumnal I still like it as a landscape.

2nd place goes to Mel. I really like the composition. It has all the ingredients just wish the colours were a bit stronger.

1st place goes to Janice (again). She's getting too good these days which is great for the club. This exactly sums up my idea
of Autumn and how short it is when the leaves fall to the damp earth. Well done Janice

I hope that I haven't trodden on too many corns good people but I have to call it as I see it. Over to you Janice.

Bit of confusion at this end, who came third, Mr or Mrs, the descriptions of our shots is misleading compared to the result ?

Sorry about your confusion.

Obviously both of your images are landscapes and I thought that I gave more attention to the 'harvest' shot which I said that
I liked. To settle the issue as shown the 3rd place goes to MR Y or Eric if you prefer.
