#173 - Sport

Post by PhilipHowe »

I know we've had this topic before, but it was a few years ago (and it was posted by me). I'm loving the Olympics at the moment, but I mean this to be sport in as broadest terms possible. I'm looking for action shots, still shots conveying concentration, competitiveness, or just taking part. Any sport whatsoever, doesn't have to be an event, or organised.

Closing entries at Midnight, Saturday 27th August.

Hi, firstly, thank you to all who wntered.
Secondly, apologies for the delay in judging. I've been away and forgot to do it before I went.

Janice:

I like that this is in the middle of the action and the guy with the egg is fully sharp. The colours are good and I like that the background is slightly out of focus, however, you can see this has been done in post production which has spoilt it somewhat, as you can see the line across. Also, the action is so enthralling that one spectator has had to have a little lie down.

Stopher:

I like that you have gone for a letterbox crop to get all the relevant people in and concentrate on the action. You have frozen the action well. I am not keen on the vignette, as I think it's distracting, but, otherwise very good.

Tracey:

A great shot. All the action and movement is in the blurred background. The spokes cannot be seen on the bike, showing that he is travelling at high speed. It is always tempting to freeze the action and the spokes would be still. This shows you have tracked him well. I am not keen on the monochrome treatment though, I think it has lost some detail in the background.

TerryA:

As opposed to the photo from Tracey, the bottom of a climb is a very slow affair and you have captured this well, including the following tribe of motorbikes and the spectators. You can see the spokes are in motion and the bike wouldn't be in focus as it is thrusted side to side when the rider is out of his seat. The colours are good. The only distracting thing is a slight black stripe towards the left of the photo.

Mike:

Really good, crisp photo, which is well framed. I don't know why he's got his tongue out, but that adds to it. It's sharp where it should be and his sponsors would be happy with that. The background is blurred, however, it looks 'bobbly', was this in post processing or is that a characteristic of the lens?

John:

Not the easiest of sports to photograph, as is anything to do with children. This is in good focus and you can see the concentration in her face, again, framed well, so you can see where she will be running to.

Judging:

3rd - Mike - I like the portrait feel of this and it is a really good shot.
2nd - Stopher - I think if the vignette wasn't there, then this may have been the winner.
1st - Tracey - I would love to see the colour version of this, but this has everything a good sports shot should have. Motion, action, focus and sharpness.

Thanks to all who entered, and over to Tracey.
