Competition #247 - people in uniforms

Post by melbarnes »

We owe a lot to people in uniforms, NHS, armed forces, police, fire brigade, ambulance, etc, etc, so dig out your best image of a person/people in uniforms. Closing date Sunday 29th November at 10pm.

Thanks for the many great entries to the competition, it was well subscribed. Here's my comments on the competition, together with the results.

John:
You’ve really captured the moment here in this grab shot; there’s seemingly something amusing been said that’s resulted in at least two wide smiles! Shame about the bottom left hand corner, which is slightly distracting, but I guess that cropping it out would result in the officer in the sunglasses being partly lost in the image.
Andy:
I love the effect you have achieved with this image – I’m not sure how you did this (and I’d really like to know what the technique is called), but it is excellent.
Ken:
A nice clear photo, well captured – and obviously a parade expected, judging by the spectators lining the street. A change of position when taking the shot would reveal more of the uniform – but I guess this is a shot that you took some time before the competition, as no doubt most of the entries were, given the current lockdown situation?
Anne:
A real photo-journalism image of a rescue, taken under low light, hence the noise – and there are tools to reduce this.
Graham:
Good image here – clearly two guys braving the cold ! I think a crop here to remove the space to left would improve the image.
Mike:
Superb portrait of a soldier in uniform – you have done really well to capture this grab shot image, in spite of the distracting background.
Darren:
Great image of a passing out parade? I guess your son is in there amongst his colleagues> I love the letter-box style. It’s a shame that you couldn’t have taken this from a central position, but I guess there were many other proud parents there.
Simon:
Very handsome officer and brilliant concept for a composite! I love the monochrome treatment. Slight halo around the plane – and there’s an easy fix for this in Photoshop.
Results:
I know I said “people in uniforms” as opposed to “a person in a uniform”, but my vote goes to Mike, with Andy second, and Simon third. Over to you now, Mike, to choose another topic!

Cheers Mel

Taken at at World War re-enactment some time ago in Lytham thanks to Chris Harrison and his lovely wife Jayne who took me under their wings.

It was the expression on this chap's face that got to me. Not sure if I was in his army who I would be afraid of. Him or the enemy.
