Competition #21 STILL LIFE

Post by Walter Brooks »

Many thanks Tom for your adjudication in the last competition :-d.

For the next competition subject I have chosen Still Life (to take in Table Top; Product Shots; Food; Advertising style or whatever you want), giving another opportunity to travel far and wide around the house on those cold and wet days of what is left of summer. What I have included is a simple set up using an old Vivitar 283 flash off camera and reflectors - dosen't need complex set up, daylight will work just as well. Plenty of inspiration to be found - just pick up a magazine ...

As I am away on holiday soon I will need to extend the closing date to Midnight 9th September. See you all on my return,

Walter

Paul, if I have not posted this correctly, please advise or correct - many thanks ...

After an overnight flight and a bit of jet lag - i'm back. My comments on the images -

John - like the colours in this shot, reminescent of an Old Master painting; distracted by the bottom left corner, which I think needs something in there and a bit tight at the top.

Len - like repitition/ patterns in photos; think the top could have been cropped to leave a square format and then a point of focus around the bottom right 1/3rd.

Sue - the kaleidescope of vibrant punchy colours works, like the top angle; think it may have benefited from that top angle detail being replicated.

Tracey - good use of colour; but as with Len's I think it would benefit from a crop and a point of focus.

Myra - another good use of colour; would have liked to see the bottom of the background level and the top of the arrangement included.

Mike - liked the idea of the reflections - I am assuming it's a bowl; distracted by the 'hot spot' and the area not covered by the marshmallows.

Bert - good detail in the three medals; the brightness of the ribbon colour competes too much with the gold.

Lee - good capture of the full reflection as a record type shot; although a bit tight at the bottom.

Bassameg - good record type shot with nice detail in the medal; think it would benefit from a bit of fill in at the bottom for more even lighting.

Terry - like the single directional light; think it would benefit from a tighter crop to get rid of some of the shadows and some attention to the background to enhance the shot.

Keith - like the idea, the tap leading the eye to the shell; think it would benefit from more space around the edges of the tap, but the stainless sink dominates too much.

My critique over -

1st - Bassameg
2nd - John
3rd - Lee

Over to you Bassameg, regards

Walter
