A great day in the studio

Post by Gill Blower »

Today myself and Lesley had the pleasure of working in the studio with couple Pippa & Simon and Channelle. We also had with us Paul Jones who once again gave up his valuable time to show us different lighting techniques. Paul is truly an inspiration and is passionate about his work but more importantly he is willing to share his knowledge with others... I would highly recommend, if you are interested in studio lighting, to ask Paul for his guidance. Just to watch him interact with the models is a lesson in itself. We learned so much today. Paul, you are a star 5S. Thanks again.

Thanks Gill

I had a good time. It's great working with people who really want to put some time and effort into improving their photography skills. You and Lesley, along with Darren and Mel, have the makings of formidable portrait photographers.

Seeing the way that you and Lesley were working today and the ideas you were coming out with to guide the models was brilliant. I know the lighting setups were very different to what you've experienced before. Study the handouts I gave you and keep practising and don't be afraid to experiment.

The three models today were fantastic. You did well Gill. :D Two gorgeous young ladies and a guy who was a finalist in the Mens Health 'Cover Model of the Year' competition. Wow! He had some of the best abs I've ever seen! (I checked through my Mens Health mags when I got home and found the issue with him in).

I'm available if you fancy another session anytime.

Hi Paul I would just like to second Gill's sentiments and thank you so much for giving us your valuable time yesterday at the club, sharing your knowledge and expertise to help us improve our technique with studio lighting and our models, Pippa, Simon and Chanel. We really appreciated you being there, and had a great time - hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Hope you managed to get your new monitor screen, too! :D

See you soon.

Paul, his abs won't have been a patch on yours, I'm sure.
Love hearing how enthusiastic people can be about studio photography. At the end of the day, it's just a couple of lights, someone to stand in front and someone with a camera, isn't it...
Posing couples is hard, my favourite portrait I have ever taken is of two girls and it took me about 40 minutes, hundreds of shots and a few trips to the computer to get it right. Took me less than 5 minutes in Lightroom to finish it off.

Lighting absolutely fascinates me now.

You're very welcome Lesley. Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and loved seeing how much you and Gill were getting out of it. :D

Yes, thanks. I'm sitting here in front of my new monitor. Wow! What a difference. 8)

I have wonderful abs. They're just slightly hidden under a layer of chocolate.

Hi Paul, would you please email me a copy of the handout showing the lighting set-up. Very impressed by the photos!

Hi Mel - It isn't emailable. I'll have a chat with you on Thursday, but the notes basically cover the same lighting setups and things we've gone through together.
