Camera Portrait setting

Just out of curiosity...
On our Lumix on the SCN mode for portraits it suggests having the telephoto option on. Why is this so for a subject that isn't at a distance?

Perspective is the key. This is controlled by the distance we are from a subject.

If we used a wide angle lens, to fill the frame with a portrait we would need to be very close. The nose would seem to loom at us and the ears would be too small, so the portrait would look very strange.

Conversely, with a telephoto lens we have to move back to get all the subject in and the proportions of the facial features look more natural as a result. Also, the background can be thrown out of focus and that helps concentrate our eyes on the face.

Hope that helps!
