Telephoto lens converter

I use a Panasonic Lumix G3 14-42 for my son's football matches (sports settings serving me fine at the moment  ). I find, obviously, that it's not quite good enough for decent shots on the opposite side of the pitch. That's even with the inbuilt telephoto setting and zooming and cropping.
So... as my budget doesn't extend to a new full lens, I was wondering if a telephoto converter would be an option.
Does the converter (I've seen a 2X) just double the 14-42? And/or would it double the inbuilt telephoto?
Or shall I just save up for a full new lens?

Converters double the focal length, or at least 2x ones do, but also lose two stops of light. So a 50mm f/2 lens would turn into a 100mm f/4.

The upside is that they are compact and convenient to carry. The downside is that most, unless costing as much as a new lens, reduce quality significantly.

So on balance I would save up for the appropriate lens.
