Gimp/photoshop

Post by Vicky Buckley »

Hi,

Someone has mentioned GIMP to me and I was wondering if it is any good before I downloaded. I am just looking to convert the dpi of an image that I have taken of my friends dog as she has asked if I could get it printed (image is 72dpi).

Unfortunately I dont have photoshop :-[ but would like to get it printed for her for a pressie.

All still a bit confusing for me...sorry

GIMP is free and may well do what you need. You need to resize with a resolution of 300 ppi (pixels per inch - dpi refers to printers and is dots per inch) at whatever size you want the print to be.

Photoshop Elements is a complete image editing program that is probably all you will ever need - try www.amazon.co.uk for a good price.

We are doing a beginners session on Saturday 6th November between 10am and 12 noon.
Best regards

Vicky, don't be put off by GIMP because it is 'free'. It is actually community driven software. It has features way beyond what you would use. I have used it for years and haven't found anything I couldn't do. I only changed to photoshop when I bought a new laptop with Windows 7 on it (some of the plugins I used suddenly went slow). I am now in the process of getting rid of Windows 7 and will then go back to GIMP.

If you want all the menus to look the same as photoshop (so you can follow tutorials etc), then have a look at GIMPshop. It is a fully featured GIMP with menus set up as per Photoshop. Bear one thing in mind, GIMP is not a free equivalent of Photoshop, as it does so much more. There is also a wealth of plugings and scripts (actions) to help you on your way.

If you find something you are missing, email the community who run it and more than likely, it will appear.
