Underwater camera

Hi all.
I am off on honeymoon in 6 weeks time to the Maldives.
I want to get some underwater piccies and am looking for a camera.
I've looked at housings for my SLR, but they are way too expensive.

I'm currently looking at an Olympus muji 1050sw. I was wondering if anyone has one, or any experience of underwater shooting. This looks like a good compact as well. I can get a refurbished model off flea bay for £120. The other camera is a Pentax Optio (I'm a big fan) W60, at £169.

I'd appreciate any comments you have.

Depends on the quality you are looking for but I know there are underwater disposables. . . problem is if they don't come out okay it is a long way to go back!

Hi

The only time I have used a camera underwater was when I learned to dive. I had a 35mm film Canon compact, the pics were ok, but not outstanding, just holiday snaps really.

I lent it to someone a couple of months back, if you would like to borrow it for snaps you are more than welcome. Let me know and I'll get it back.

Pammie, Thank you very much for the kind offer. I am thinking of buying another compact anyway, so the Olympus looks like a decent all rounder. I do have a n underwater disposable I bought from Decathlon for £1, so I'm not expecting magic from it!

I've just bought the Olmpus Muji 1050sw, so for those who are interested, I will try it out in the bath tonight and report back ...
It looks like a sturdy camera, so may be my main compact, the steady function is really good.

I bought a disposable Kodak underwater camera from Boots last year and took some alright quality photos at a depth of around 1-2 meters with it. I think it cost around £5. Worth a shot for the price.

A while ago i remember seeing something on tv about creating a housing to use any camera underwater
Basically built a waterproof housing with a clear plastic front.. i'll see if i can find anything relevant on the interwebs

All i could find was for a video camera but the same concept can be used if you get a remote shutter (with the remote just poking out) put a bag around it from inside the box so that the remote sensor is protected from the water as well (seal around the hole for the wire also) and then follow the video..

i wouldn't try this myself but it looks pretty safe as long as everything is sealed properly
