Kodachrome was simply the best colour film. Virtually grainless, accurate colour and archival provided it was kept dark and dry.
Kodak started the war against K, IMHO anyway, by gradually reducing the quality of processing, so we had a magenta cast. Professionals lost faith in it and gradually the quality deteriorated until the less able E-6 films surpassed it in every way.
Why would they do this? Because K is very difficult and expensive to make and process. The machines were horrendously expensive to manufacture and maintain. I'm sure Kodak would have loved everyone to change to Ektachrome many years ago and get the Kodachrome process off their backs.
That's my suspicion anyway! But whatever the reason, it's now gone.
