I really like this image but I am not sure whether it is technically any good!!!
I have included a smaller version of the the original which is not straight and is rather flat and my attempt at improving it. I wondered if the standard crop splits too neatly in half and leaves too much sea, included the burnt out area bottom right so I tried a square crop.
The other thing I am not sure about is the lens flare - I like it. I am not sure how I would get rid of it if I chose to.

I think this is the strongest of your images Gordon. The square crop also works very nicely and is certainly one way to remove the offending highlights. Alternatively, you could try a letterbox format and crop it the other way.
I like the tonal values of the scene, it's nicely under-stated and I'd leave that pretty much as it is.

Re: image 3
I kinda like this one, and I'm glad you didn't convert it to mono.
There's lovely light on the steps and you did well to capture it.
The flare doesn't bother me too much, but I'm guessing the patch tool or clone tool would take care of it if you wanted to.
