'Afghan Girl' and Iconic Photographs
At last night's studio session with Melissa someone mentioned the famous "Afghan Girl" photograph, so here's more information on it.
Sharbat Gula is an Afghan woman who was the subject of a famous photograph by journalist Steve McCurry. Gula was living as a refugee in Pakistan during the time of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan when she was photographed. The image brought her recognition when it was featured on the cover of the June 1985 issue of National Geographic Magazine at a time when she was approximately 12 years old. Gula was known throughout the world simply as "the Afghan Girl" until she was formally identified in early 2002. The photograph has been likened to Leonardo da Vinci's painting of the Mona Lisa and is sometimes popularly referred to as "the Afghan Mona Lisa".

Taking the topic one step further, what are your favourite 'iconic' photographs?
There are so many to choose from, but, for me, these are a few that come to mind:
Bob Carlos Clarke
(I've seen so many people try to replicate variations on this shot)
Christine Keeler, photographed by Lewis Morley
(Another popular one that people try to emulate)
Twiggy, photographed by Barry Lategan
'Fred with Tyres', by Herb Ritts
Lastly, a photographer that you may not have heard of, Eric Watson - who was responsible for much of the Pet Shop Boys album and publicity photography. Here's an iconic shot of Chris Lowe.

Some great images there Paul. We didn't get our pictures close to the iconic Afgham Girl, but Melissa looked good anyway, so everyone wins!
Best regards

Thanks John. Yes.
It's been a bit quiet on the forum lately, so here's a topic that we can all add to... What's everyone's favourite iconic photo?

I have always been deeply impressed by this Ansel Adams image:

If we look at the typical image we might shoot at first sight, then it really begins to show the power of the Adams take on it:

Before I even thought of picking up a camera, Eugene Richee's photos of Louise Brooks had a massive impact on me -

Re: 'Afghan Girl' and Iconic Photographs
If I had to choose, then these two images have stuck with me the longest and still move me emotionally.
Napalm Attack by Nick Ut - the look of fear in those childrens faces, awful, still brings tears to my eyes
On a lighter note, Lunchtime atop a Skyscraper by Chares C Ebbets - again, fear - for the mens safety and the photographer, it wouldn't have taken much to topple off to their deaths. Tracey

Re: 'Afghan Girl' and Iconic Photographs
I'm just bumping this old thread in light of the 'Top 10 photographs that changed the World' thread posted today.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2862
I see that Tracey chose two images that made the list.
What other iconic images would you add to the list?

Re: 'Afghan Girl' and Iconic Photographs
Hi all.
I'd choose Pennie Smith's photo of Paul Simenon for The Clash " London Calling " album cover. One of the best rock photos ever, even though she hated the fact that in her opinion it was out of focus.
There's surely hope for us all!
Regards,
Phil.
