What Makes a Good Portrait?

Post by Paul Jones »

Following on from my ADAPS presentation last week, I've added a post to my Blog - 'What Makes a Good Portrait: 10 tips for better portraits'

Link - http://www.pauljones.org/?p=703

Do you have any other tips to share?

All good stuff Paul. Obviously we need to know our cameras very well, but after that I would think eyes and communication. The eyes are the key to the image, open or closed, and getting communication with the model is the way to ensure we are seeing something of their personality.

Just watch how models get uncertain in group shoots when a photographer doesn't speak to them.

To be honest, some people I've had to shoot many times before I've managed the shot I think encapsulates them as a person. Others are more immediate, but it's always a challenge.
Best regards

Thanks John.

That's a good point about repeat shoots. I've also experienced it with several subjects. Take Melissa for example - each shoot gets better than the last. 8)
